Which South Salt Lake Records Open
South Salt Lake does not keep one master people index. A record follows the office that made or retained it. The City Recorder handles council proceedings, contracts, permits, and municipal requests. Salt Lake County holds deeds, assessments, taxes, marriage licenses, and jail data. Utah courts control case files, while state and county vital-record offices issue certificates under separate access rules.
| File group | Responsible office | Web access | Other route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minutes, contracts, permits | South Salt Lake City Recorder | Posted archives and digital GRAMA form | PDF form, state portal, or Recorder counter |
| Deeds, liens, plats | Salt Lake County Recorder | Free property list; paid Data Services | Copy form, office indexes, and County Archives |
| Parcel and tax facts | County Assessor and Treasurer | Free owner, address, parcel, GIS, and tax tools | Office request for retained nonportal files |
| Court cases | Utah courts and local court clerks | Paid Xchange; MyCase for many personal cases | Free courthouse terminal, clerk copy request, Archives |
| Birth and death certificates | Utah OVRS and County Health | Official online order, not a current public index | Mail, eligible counter order, historical Archives |
| Jail and supervision status | County Sheriff and Utah Corrections | Separate jail and offender searches | Agency contact or focused records request |
Open files can still contain redactions. Sealed and expunged cases, juvenile and adoption material, recent vital certificates, medical facts, and protected investigative details do not become public merely because an office has a search page. When open and restricted facts share a file, ask for the segregable public portion.
Who Keeps South Salt Lake Records
Jurisdiction matters more than the mailing city. South Salt Lake is a separate city, but it is not the county seat. City Hall is the right door for local proceedings and department files. The county government campus in Salt Lake City is the main counter for recorded land and assessed property. The municipal Justice Court keeps its local file even when a public case summary appears in the statewide system.

South Salt Lake Records Under GRAMA
Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act, or GRAMA, gives any person a right to inspect and copy public records during normal hours. It also classifies some material as private, controlled, or protected. Classification can attach to one field or attachment, not just the whole file. Payment alone never grants access to restricted material.
The agency must already have the record. GRAMA does not force it to answer a question, create a report, or obtain another government's file. A specific request names the series, date span, subject, identifier, department, and format.
Utah agencies had to begin privacy programs by late 2025. That newer duty did not repeal GRAMA, but it reinforces careful field-level redaction.
- Custodian
- The government office that prepares, owns, or keeps the record.
- Index
- A list that points to a record. It is not always the document image.
- Certified copy
- A copy authenticated by the keeper for formal use.
- Exemption
- A legal basis to withhold all or part of an otherwise responsive file.
South Salt Lake GRAMA Channels
The city GRAMA page offers three paths: submit its digital form, download the PDF and deliver it to the Recorder, or use the Utah Open Records Portal. The form asks for requester contact details, a specific record description, purpose, access format, and belief about public status. Optional branches cover fee waivers, nonpublic access grounds, and an expedited response with support.
The captured city form shows why a precise date, event, person, department, and case or permit number can save time. Ordinary city responses may take up to 10 business days. The expedited branch states 5 business days and requires a supported public-benefit basis. Research or copy charges may follow submission.
Salt Lake County uses its separate NextRequest portal. Send county-created records there instead of asking the city to retrieve them. For either government, request an electronic native file when useful, seek a cost estimate before chargeable work, and ask to inspect records when inspection meets the need.
South Salt Lake Recorded Property Files
The county Recorder ties a South Salt Lake parcel to deeds, liens, plats, legal descriptions, parcel-number history, and title-chain material. Its free public search is property-keyed, not a broad free grantor or grantee name browser. It needs either a street address or parcel number and returns a quick document list.
| Search control | Entry type | Use or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Property Address | Address text | One property key is required |
| Parcel Number | Parcel text | Alternative to the address |
| Free Search | Action | Quick recorded-document list without login |
| Purchase or Login | Account controls | Opens paid Data Services access |
The public-search screen makes the address-or-parcel requirement clear. For chain of title, tract indexes, document images, and other advanced functions, Recorder Data Services offers a $5, 24-hour package with 150 data units, plus larger account packages. The official pages do not state an earliest online year.
The Data Services landing screen separates free browsing from paid document work. Offline routes remain vital. A Recorder copy form can identify an instrument by book and page, index line, party names, date, and type. Recorded copies cost $2 per page; certified copies add $5, while historical or vault copies cost $5 per page. Office indexes and County Archives cover gaps.
South Salt Lake Parcel Records
The free Salt Lake County Assessor query accepts owner, address, or Parcel ID. Enter an individual as last name, first name; the classic form accepts at least three surname letters. Address controls can be widened by frontage number or street part. Parcel numbers follow the displayed county format, and a shortened prefix can return a block.
The result can establish an assessed owner, site address, parcel ID, acreage, tax class, district, exemption fields, values, and history. Site, or situs, means the property location. The reviewed public schema did not confirm a separate owner mailing-address field, so a parcel hit should not be read as proof that the owner lives there.
The county's GIS and Parcel Viewer resources add parcel shape, nearby lots, districts, and imagery. Recorder parcel data feeds the mapping base.
The map entry points help resolve a boundary or address before ordering a deed. Treasurer tools add tax notices, tax-sale material, and excess-fund information. For a retained parcel file not shown online, contact the Assessor counter or submit a focused county request.
South Salt Lake Court Records Access
South Salt Lake Justice Court handles class B and C misdemeanors, city ordinance cases, infractions, traffic matters, and small claims. Third District Court holds broader Salt Lake County civil, divorce, probate, felony, and class A misdemeanor files. Public district and justice summaries generally appear in Utah Courts Xchange from July 1, 2010 forward, with court and case exceptions.
The Xchange screen supports name or company, case number, court scope, case type, birth date, citation, and date ranges. Wildcards help with spelling variants. Results can show parties, roles, filed addresses, events, judge, charges, pleas, dispositions, and linked documents. A missing result may reflect scope, an older archive, or restricted status.
Remote access costs $10 to open an account, then $0.20 per search and $1 per available document; a monthly plan is also offered. Free Xchange terminals are available at most district courthouses and the State Law Library. MyCase lets a party view many of that person's own cases. Clerk copy forms, certified-copy service, and State or County Archives are the other documented routes.
South Salt Lake Vital Records Access
Recent certificates are not ordinary open records. Utah Code ยง26B-8-125 limits access, and eligible requesters must show identity and relationship or legal authority. The Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics offers official online, mail, and in-person ordering. County health clinics provide local counters for eligible birth and death copies and marriage or divorce abstracts.
The state ordering page routes applicants to the proper certificate and proof requirements. From July 1, 2026, an initial birth copy costs $25, death costs $35, and a marriage or divorce abstract costs $25. Extra same-record copies cost $10. The state warned in June 2026 that online and mail orders were running about six weeks out, so treat that as a dated service notice.
Historical access follows time limits: births generally open after 100 years, deaths after 50, and marriage or divorce records after 75, subject to agency rules. County Archives searches include deaths from 1847, marriages from 1887, and births from 1890. The county Clerk supplies marriage copies by mail, phone, or counter; Third District Court holds divorce decrees.
South Salt Lake Custody Records
Police incidents, jail custody, state supervision, and court outcomes are separate files. The county prisoner information system focuses on county-jail custody. Utah Corrections searches people currently incarcerated or under probation or parole by name or offender number. Someone awaiting trial in county jail will not appear in the state tool.
South Salt Lake Police Records can be reached at 801-412-3600. Identify the incident number, date, place, involved party, and exact report requested, then use the department channel or city GRAMA route. Active-investigation, victim, juvenile, medical, and safety facts may be redacted. A booking shows custody, a docket shows allegations and events, and a judgment shows the disposition. None is a substitute for another.
Use records lawfully. Official access does not permit stalking, harassment, threats, impersonation, or evasion of a protection order. Respect all registry warnings and protected-status rules.
South Salt Lake Records Across Boundaries
The South Salt Lake name begins late in the area's paper trail. Central Park incorporated in 1936, disincorporated in 1937, and returned as South Salt Lake in 1938. County land, tax, marriage, court, and probate series reach much earlier. A search for pre-1938 municipal files should also use Central Park, Millcreek, Southgate, school, ward, county, and Salt Lake City-area headings.
Geography changed again in the 1990s, when annexations nearly doubled city land and population. A current city address may have older permits or licenses filed only with Salt Lake County, although its deeds and taxes stayed countywide throughout. Postal uses of South Salt Lake, Salt Lake City, 84115, and 84119 do not settle jurisdiction. Parcel and boundary maps help identify the correct keeper.
Granite School District dates to 1904 and Granite High opened in 1906, so school records may bridge family research before municipal government existed. No official source reviewed found a blanket courthouse-fire loss. When an older file is absent online, check the specific series in County Archives or the Utah State Archives catalog rather than assuming it was destroyed.
Request South Salt Lake Public Records
Send the request to the entity that keeps the existing file. Under Utah GRAMA, the ordinary response is generally due within 10 business days, or 5 business days for a supported expedited public-benefit request. An office may grant access, deny it with reasons, say it lacks the record, or invoke an allowed extension.
- Choose the custodian. Separate city, county, court, and state records before filing.
- Check direct access. Use the posted archive, index, public terminal, or inspection option first.
- Describe the file. Give the series, subject, date span, address, case or permit number, department, and format.
- Control cost. Ask for an estimate, set a fee ceiling, request electronic delivery, and state any waiver basis.
- Read the decision. If denied, use its stated appeal route and deadline or narrow the scope without giving up a valid appeal.
Fees may cover actual duplication and some compilation work. The first quarter hour of staff time generally cannot be charged, and prepayment may be required when the estimate exceeds $50. Inspection can avoid copy charges. A denial should state its legal basis and appeal rights, normally beginning with the chief administrative officer before further review.
Verify South Salt Lake Records Carefully
A filing proves that an office recorded an event, claim, or status. It does not prove every allegation. Match more than a name when lawful facts permit: role, date, address, parcel, court, and record number can separate namesakes. Read the disposition, release, satisfaction, or later deed.
Use the copy that fits the task. An index locates the document, while a certified copy supplies the custodian's authentication. Confirm current status because portals update on different schedules. For possible fraud, reach the agency through an independently published address or phone number.
